Swolen Vulva18.03.2010
Hi i have a 2 ferrets, they are both 1 year and 6 months old they are both female and one of them has a swollen vulva. It is very enlarged, there is a milky substance coming from it and she has lost quite a bit of weight. she is still eating and drinking well but neither of my ferrets have been spayed could this be the reason why or do you think it could be very serious?

Hello,
This sounds very much like one of your ferrets has come into season. The second female ferret should come into season very shortly. They will lose weight due to the warmer weather coming in which is normal, however if you are still concerned then please bring them in to see us and we can have a closer look at them.
You have to be careful with female ferrets, because when they come into season they will stay in season until October/ November unless mated, or are given a hormone injection. If neither of these are done the ferret can become very ill getting anaemic, underweight and also devloping bone problems. If you are not planning on breeding your ferrets, the hormone injection to bring them out of season is greatly reccommended, and then a month later getting them spayed will solve this problem in the future.
If you would like to bring her in to speak to myself or to see a vet please call 01633 855825.
Thank you
