What causes an absess?

19.11.2009

My cat is constantly getting abcesses on her neck always in the same place. I have taken her to my vet and they say its through cat bites which i dont agree with. Are there any other reasons she could be getting the abcesses. She has had antibiotics at least 6 times. I dont know the cats age as she came to me as a stray.thankyou.

Hello,

Cat bites are the most common causes of absesses as cats saliva are full of bacterias, and so when they bite another cat these bacterias are transferred under the skin. As the wound heals the bacterias develop into puss with no-where to get out, therefore causing an absess. Antibiotics are the first line of treatment for an absess, however sometimes this might not completely clear it up and then the absess will return. In which case a small surgical procedure under sedation to open, drain and thoroughly clean the absess may be required.

Thank you
