Dog Photographer of the Year 2009 Overall Winner
Celebrated photographer Tim Flach is to join the judging panel for the Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year competition.
Known for his fine art photography of animals, ranging from bats to horses, Tim can boast the Sunday Times, Cirque du Soliel and Sony amongst his clients. He is perhaps best known for his astounding book Equus - “the family of animals: that goes from ass to zebra, but is mostly horses” he explains.
Dogs are another favoured subject for Flach, who has recently completed a new book which highlights different breeds of dogs. Flach said: “I am delighted to have been asked to be a judge of the Kennel Club's Dog Photographer of the Year competition. After spending a significant amount of time studying dogs and constructing images to portray their characters and their beauty, I am interested to see other people’s perspective through their images of these amazing animals.”
Winners of the competition will receive a signed copy of Tim’s new book, Dogs .
With a thorough understanding of the different breeds of dogs and an appreciation for the various forms, sizes and characteristics of dogs, Tim is perfectly placed to judge the Kennel Club annual competition.
Caroline Kisko, Communications Director at the Kennel Club said: “It is a very exciting opportunity to have such a great photographer to help spot emerging talent. Tim often looks at how we project human characteristics onto animals and so it will be very interesting to see his favourites.
“Dogs naturally make for truly amazing images - their spontaneous nature can give a fresh and dynamic feel to photos in just seconds. The entries we have had over the past years of the competition have been fascinating and we look forward to seeing this year’s selection.”
The Dog Photographer of the Year competition is open to anyone with a camera. The competition not only allows people to show off their artistic talents to a wide audience and emphasise the loving and animated characteristics of our much-loved pets, but all entry fees will go to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.
The Kennel Club Charitable Trust funds a wide variety of work ranging from supporting research into canine diseases to welfare initiatives and the promotion of support dogs, all of which give dogs healthier and happier lives. To enter the Dog Photographer of the Year competition the Kennel Club Charitable Trust asks for a small minimum donation of £3.50 to help it to support canine good causes.
There are four categories to enter, as follows:- Dogs at Work
- Dogs at Play
- Dog Portrait
- Man’s Best Friend
There is also a special category entitled ‘I love dogs’, open for children under the age of 16. A winner will be announced for each of the categories, with an overall winner being chosen as the 2010 Dog Photographer of the Year.
The winning photographs will be put on display at Discover Dogs, London’s leading dog event at Earls Court in November and the overall winning image will be placed on the front cover of the Kennel Gazette, the flagship monthly publication of the Kennel Club.The winner from each category will be presented with a framed print of their photograph.
The winner of the 16 and under category along with their parent(s)/guardian will win a day out with the professional dog photographer Marc Henrie, learning skills and practicing with dogs. They will visit Linley Sambourne House in West London and take part in the recreation of a famous image by the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron using 1840’s equipment.
The prize also includes one year’s membership of the Young Kennel Club and a state of the art Nikon digital camera in addition to the framed print. Copies of the ‘Complete Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dogs and Puppies’, ‘Top to Tail: The 360 Degrees Guide to Picking Your Perfect Pet’ and ‘The Mutt Book’ have also been donated as prizes.
