Local veterinary surgery warns pet owners of the dangers of Bonfire nightPosted: Monday 9th November, 2009
A local veterinary practice is appealing to pet owners in the area to keep their pets indoors tonight as Bonfire night gets underway.
Budget Vets, on Malpas Road, is warning pet owners of the affect fireworks can have on animals and the importance of implementing measures to ensure their safety.
In October and November last year, 682 pets were harmed by fireworks and many more were lost, according to official statistics.
Veterinary surgeon Katherine Heathcote explains: “Bonfire night can be a distressing time for many animals especially cats and dogs who can become easily distraught at erratic loud noises.
“Ensuring that pets are kept indoors and that all windows, doors and cat flaps are shut will help minimize the disruption to them. Animals have extremely sensitive ears so try playing music or switching on the television to drown out noise from fireworks. Exercising your dog well during the day will also help ensure it is tired and ready to sleep in the evening. Some owners may find their pets wanting to hide, if this happens the best thing to do is let them, however ensure they have a safe and secure place to go to.”
Dogs and other pets hate fireworks and if pets aren’t kept indoors, in some cases it can lead to them running away through fear, ensuring your pet’s collar and identification is up to date will help if this worst case scenario occurs.
Continued Katherine: “Many animals are injured every year because of an oversight by their owners. These are quite easy safety tips to follow so that this is not the case. However, if you are worried about your pet in any way, please seek medical attention straight away.”
